Let's spring back into action!

Have you been feeling an urge to get outside when the sun is shining, and the weather is just right? You're not alone. During the winter months, it's common for our sedentary tendencies to reach its peak. But with the weather warming up, it's the perfect time to spring back into action!

According to the National Institute on Aging, physical activity is one of the most important factors for healthy aging. The CDC recommends that we get at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity physical activity every week. Although that may seem like a lot, it's really not.

The term 'physical activity' refers to any movement of the body produced by skeletal muscles. So, when it comes to moderate-intensity physical activity, a lot every-day tasks such as housework and yardwork fit the bill just fine. By shifting your perspective of physical activity outside the realm of weightlifting and other sports, it makes 150 minutes a week seem a lot more feasible.

Whether you'd like to join a sports league or work on cultivating your green thumb, it's important to set realistic goals. Spring is a wonderful season for growth, but you don't want to tackle more than you can handle. Getting 'too' active too quickly can result in overuse injuries. It's like they always say, slow and steady wins the race!

Here are a few ideas for you to get back into action this spring:

  • Go for a nature walk! Endurance activities such as brisk walking or jogging increases your breathing and heart rate, maintaining the health of your circulatory system and improving your overall fitness. Plus, you can enjoy the views and get some Vitamin D in too!

  • Check out the recreational activities in your community! You can find community centers, parks, and community events that you, your family, and your friends can enjoy together.
